Home Safe—An Advantage During a Global Pandemic
Dr. Jeffrey Perl, from Toronto, Dr. Alan S. Kliger, at Yale, and Dr. Martin J. Schreiber, Chief Medical Office for DaVita home modalities presented on dialysis patients’ comorbidities and immunologic vulnerabilities—and the benefits of reducing risk by dialyzing at home. The ASN COVID-19 Response Team made nine recommendations, including policy advocacy for rapid PD catheter placement, reducing required home dialysis nurse experience to 6-months, speeding up home transitions, disseminating best practices for COVID-19-positive patients, further clarifying telehealth, assuring home supplies, ensuring safe trash disposal by positive patients, addressing PPE shortages, and lightening the administrative load for lab tests.
