Eight KidneyX Summit Winners Split $9.2M in Prize Money for
Phase 2 Bioartificial Kidneys
The Kidney Innovation Accelerator (KidneyX) is a partnership between
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the American
Society of Nephrology. Track 1 winners ($1.6M) are Dr. David K.C. Cooper
for pig kidney transplants in monkeys and Dr. Matt Tector, renal
xenograft. Track 2 winners ($1M) are Dr. Anthony Atala for a 3D
vascularized biomimetic platform, Dr. William Chang for combining PD and
kidney organoids, Dr. Nils Olof Lindstöm for connecting nephrons to
synthetic organizers to drain artificial kidneys, Dr. Harold C. Ott for
tools to enable autonomous blood purification implants, Dr. Shuvo Roy,
for an immunoprotective bioreactor for kidney cell encapsulation and Dr.
Ben Shepherd, bioengineered therapies. Read
